Migita Auction - April 9th 2010 - Photos

Migita Auction - April 9th 2010 - PhotosKoibito Japan went to the Migita Koi Farm Jumbo Tosai auction. Many regular Japanese buyers were present, and also two foreigners, (Koibito Japan was one of them!)...

The auciton really started on April 8th, after travelling for four and half hours from Okayama, we arrived in Oyama City, about 45 mins north of Tokyo on the Tohoku Shinkansen line. The reason I say the auction started on the 8th is that there was an "Enkai" Japanese term for a formal party at the hotel where everyone was staying, then followed by drinks in a local bar. The auction proper started at 10 p.m. sharp on the morning of the 9th. Plenty of tired faces, but everyone was there, and everyone was ready for the auction to start.

This being the first Migita Koi Farm Auciton Koibito Japan has attended, we didn't know what to expect. Koi started to be brought out, and to my surprise they didn't bring the koi out in the order of the auction pamphlet, more it was in a random style. This made bidding hard, and keeping track of selling prices impossible. We can tell you that average prices on the Female Guarantee koi were considerably higher than we expected sitting at a rough average of 300,000 yen or so. Un-sexed/not guaranteed koi were considerably cheaper though...

All in all a great couple of days, and a breeder with whom Koibito Japan would like to work more closely with in the future. We are looking forward to his Nisai (2 yr old) auction in Autumn 2010, and also looking forward to seeing the koi we purchased today coming out of the mudpond after the summer.
